Pharoahe Monch – Shine Feat. Mela Machinko

•July 13, 2010 • Leave a Comment

When I was first caught news of who was involved in the making of  W.A.R. I was hopeful that the project would throw up something special but nothing had prepared me for what seems like enormously overdue a return to the wider public eye for Diamond D who is certainly no slouch in the beats department if you ask me as much as I am feeling them M-Phazes, Exile & Marco Polo and the other producers on the LP have their work cut out to not sound like overrated new jacks because this beat is on some modern classic s**t!!…

Admittedly when I was finding my own voice with the raps I most wanted to be like Pharoahe Monch or Special Ed and on this new release Monch does not disappoint in the way he puts words together as a much needed reminder that rapping is an art form midway through the first verse he let’s the beat breathe for a second  in order to deliver…

“Where I come from no one runs when funds run low in lump sums

We choose to dump dum dum ??? ???? dum dun

we livin’ humdrum in the slum where scum conceal stun guns

the words mum for fun son conundrums ain’t pretty

in the cesspool called New York shitty”

Long time collaborator Mela Machinko returns once again on Shine to bring the that scrunch yo’ damn face up  soul too I’m struggling to remember a more heavy track yet this year I have had this on constantly since I got it and I’m sure if you REALLY feel Hip Hop you will too.

Verb T & Fliptrix @ Wordplay & Scum Dog Millionaire movie shoot

•July 13, 2010 • Leave a Comment

This coming Wednesday will see Verb T & Fliptrix make a first Wordplay appearance at The Cellar in Oxford.

Giving us the chance to maybe hear tracks from the early Back Hand Slap Talk days right through Bring It back To Basics & Broken Window up to the current release The Spaar Zoot Mixtape from Verb T with Fliptrix in tow with two strong releases to his name the debut Force Fed Imagery and this years Theory Of Rhyme.

Click flyer for Facebook event page.

Support on the night comes in the form of Legoman who has definitely earned all the admiration he gets from the Wordplay faithful and more by consistently being one of the spitters that lights up the Pass The Mic’s and open mic sessions so it’s only right that he finally gets to display a little more of what the Legoman has to offer alongside the the face of Phat Sessions Elliott Cornell who has been very instrumental in making Wednesdays at The Cellar the phenomenon it has become fronting the PS house band with his charismatic no fear off the heads and I found he has a few tricks up his sleeve recently on the production tip too.

The event will be filmed by MVN films and at the beginning of the night they will be filming scenes for a Oxford independent movie entitled Scum Dog Millionaire.

Durrty Goodz – Born Blessed (Download)

Arguably the best of the new generation of MC’s Doogz is revered by Grime fans and Hip Hop heads in equal amounts from the mixtape joints and Wiley disses even if you didn’t cop the Axiom EP or 2009’s Ultrasound if you are a fan of rap surely you will have heard of Durrty Goodz

Born Blessed

My appreciation for Durrty Goodz stems from him seeming more schooled in Hip Hop than all the UK mc’s that have painted themselves into that little grime corner and can’t get out. In his time on the scene he has lit up Grime beats, Bashment riddims and hip hop beats.

Two of his more recent collabo’s that make my personal favourites playlist are his features alongside Me1 on Pay Me No Mind and DJ Mentat‘s What’s Happ’nin.

Goodz has let loose another free LP via his own website. For Born Blessed download link & tracklist

Ed Sheeran – Homeless (Download)

I admit that I am one of the only people in the whole UK that slept on Ed Sheeran.

But anybody who knows me knows that I refuse to like something just because of the hype.

Ed has proved to be the phenomenal talent I had read about quite simply by backing up his buzz with dope songs and highly engaging live shows. I had the pleasure of meeting the man himself during the Example tour for which he was opening act I was introduced to him in Oxford by my man Fanny from Ou Est Le Swimming Pool as a local rapper to which Ed Sheeran says “really lets have some bars” then starts strumming away and tapping out a beat on his guitar so I respond as any self respecting rappers should and kick some rhymes to which he says “you should join us on stage for my final song” … really? OK.

This is something that in my years I have never known somebody in the type of position this guy is in to do. So to me it goes beyond him being a nice guy. To show love to MC Nobody just because you like the way he raps used to be part and parcel with Hip Hop and what happened backstage may have been the first impromptu cypher I have been involved in for years making him not just a dope singer or just a dope musician or just a dope entertainer but also a young dude that whether on purpose or inadvertently has love a love respect for music as an art and recognizes the traditions that help you build your skills which to rap nerds instantly puts you way ahead of the competition but he also has a more wide appeal.

Can’t front on him… not even a little!!

Homeless was unleashed via Ed’s twitter feed on friday …go get it!!

On The Essance he spat “I see this life like it’s fight night a couple of stolen moments in the limelight”

Yungun finally resurfaced on twitter last Wednesday and announced he’d be  stepping back under the spotlight at the Southbank Centre for E4‘s Udderbelly on the 1st July and on Friday tweeted us to a free track courtesy of himself and Mr Thing from their next mixtape.

To the crate digger this will be sampling for dummies but he considering the weather there is no more apt track to return with.

Chaundon has started stoking up the fire for his next long player No Excuses with a  track the artist himself describes as “uncut lyricism” over a beat by Australia’s own M-Phazes add to that a little bit of soul on the hook courtesy of Carlitta Durand.
